Marietta Jane Goines, 85, of Kingwood, WV, passed away on Monday, April 27, 2015, at her home.
Marietta was born in Kingwood, October 20, 1929, a daughter of the late Jesse and Laylor Jane (Younger) McDonald Sr.
Marietta grew up during segregation and attended "The Beverly Colored School" which was a one room school house during the week and a church on Sundays. During her high school years, she was commercially bussed to Morgantown High School, and after having to walk a mile to the bus stop, she would often have to stand, giving up her seat to the white passengers. After completing her high school education with a perfect attendance, being elected class Valedictorian, and receiving two of the three scholarships given out, she went on to WV State College where she studied in Education. Returning to Preston County, she worked several years as a teacher's aide in grade school. Her love of children inspired her to commute back and forth to Fairmont State College, obtaining her Teachers Degree in Early Childhood, allowing her to teach at North Central WV Head Start in Howesville for many years before retiring in 1999. Marietta touched many lives with her very strong Christian lifestyle, even touching the lives of some of the Challenge Academy Cadets with her words of wisdom to them "Take time to be kind, because everybody is God's somebody" when they did their community service at her food pantry. Marietta loved singing with "The Ladies of the Gospel" from the Love Chapel United Methodist Church, where she attended. Her brothers, Jesse and Herbert McDonald transported their choir in and out of Preston County. Marietta was founder of the famous Preston County Buckwheat Festival corndogs that people return yearly for. In 2006 her corn dog recipe won first place in the WV State Fair in the recipe challenge. She was recognized for keeping her election pole open during the tornado in Preston County. During her life's journey, Marietta has seen hungry, not only around the world but here at home as well. She ran Ms. Mary Loves Way Food Pantry from 1999 until present, and she has fed many families in her home saying God inspired her. Feeding the hungry brought her recognition from President George Bush Sr. during his term and the Knights of Columbus, where she received awards from both for her selfless efforts to make a difference. Marietta's life did not go unnoticed and in 2008, she was the recipient of the State of West Virginia Life Time Achievement Award through the All Black Hall of Fame in Charleston. Most importantly, she loved time with her family, especially her sons, Russell, known for Russ's Ribs and Frank, known for Frank's Batter Up.
She is survived by two sons, Russell Goines, Jr. and Frank Goines, both of Kingwood; one sister, Sarah Elizabeth Goines of Parkersburg; 6 grandchildren, Jeremy, Jason, Jesse, John, Jessica and Frank Goines, II; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Goines, Sr.; three brothers, Calvin Lawrence McDonald, Herbert McDonald, Sr. and Jesse McDonald, Jr.; one sister, Grace McDonald; one grandson, Nathaniel Goines.
Friends will be received at the Rotruck-Lobb Kingwood Chapel, 295 South Price Street; on Thursday, April 30, 2015, from 3-8pm; on Friday, May 1, 2015, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with Pastors Jonathon and Phyllis Anderson officiating.
