Robert Richmond Obituary

Robert G. "Bob" Richmond, 80, of Kingwood, WV, died on Tuesday, October 27, 2015, at Windy Hill Village, an assisted living facility in Kingwood.

Robert was born April 25, 1935, in Waltham, MA, a son of the late Gould Spofford and Hilda (Lynch) Richmond.

A New Hampshire native and a graduate of Dartmouth College, he served as an Army officer at Fort Knox, KY. He then taught school in Newport, VT, prior to being sworn into the Foreign Service of the United States. After two years in Washington, Bob served overseas in Germany, Australia, Sweden and Viet-Nam. He then spent five years as the State Department's economic officer for Viet-Nam. When the war ended, he and his first wife Helen hosted two Vietnamese families. As he once said, "13 people for breakfast was interesting." Bob spent four years in Haiti and three years as the Economic officer on the Korean desk before being loaned to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce for two years. His last tour of duty was in the Department's Anti-Drug Bureau, supervising drug crop spraying overseas. After his first wife died, Bob took an early retirement and moved to Kingwood, commenting after living all over the world, he was happiest in West Virginia. Bob attended St. Michael's Episcopal Church, and he enjoyed volunteering with the Kingwood Volunteer Fire Department activities during the Buckwheat Festival and the monthly Fireman's breakfast.

He is survived by his wife, Caroline Richmond; brother, Peter Richmond; sister, Roberta Jenkins; son, Ken Richmond; daughters, Lisa Richmond, Polly G. Richmond-Roberts; grandchildren, Helen and Evan Dawson, Marly and Nael Roberts, Nicole Norman; step-sons, Joe Sherman, Mike Sherman, Will Sherman; step-grandchildren, Trey, Tim and Tate Sherman, Bryan Kelley.

Friends will be received on Saturday, November 7, 2015, at the Rotruck-Lobb Kingwood Chapel, 295 South Price Street, from 12:00 p.m. until the time of the funeral service in the funeral home chapel at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Frances J. McCoy officiating. Cremation services will be provided by Rotruck-Lobb crematory following the funeral.
