Mary Wright Obituary

Mary Wright, 75 of Terra Alta, WV, and formerly of Washington, D.C., passed away peacefully on April 7, 2024, comforted by her beloved husband Marty of more than 50 years and family.  In addition to her husband, Mary is survived by her sons Marty, Jr. (wife Stephanie Pauley) and Mickey (wife Karen Hegarty); and six grandchildren (Caitlin, Bridget, Rylee, Owen, Donovan and Benjamin).

Known to all as a kind friend, loving wife and amazing mother, Mary was always at the ready to show her latest knitting creation and to share stories about her family, especially proud tales about her sons and the antics of her grandchildren.

Born in Washington, D.C., to the late Michael Murray Doyle and Adele (Owings) Doyle, and sister to Christine Doyle Janke, Mary developed lifelong friendships among her area catholic school classmates.   It was there that one eternal relationship blossomed, when Mary met a young man named Marty Wright. The two grew close in their teenage years, and despite life’s separation, their path always continued to draw these two soulmates together.  Mary and Marty wed in 1973, and soon after had two sons, whom she deemed her greatest blessings.  Whether you call it kismet, destiny, or God’s plan, their love for one another was eternal and lasted the entirety of Mary’s life.

An executive assistant with GEICO early in her career, Mary and her family relocated to various places due to her husband’s employment, including Fairfax, VA; Tampa, FL; Atlanta, GA; Denver, CO; Wheeling, WV and ultimately Terra Alta, WV.   Despite the moves, Mary easily adapted to change and turned her skills to education and held various counselor and assistant positions in her children’s schools, including J.K. Mullen High School (in Denver, CO); and St. John’s College High School (in Washington, D.C.).

But, her true calling was knitting.  Gifted in all styles of knitting, her creations were often sought out by stores hoping to sell her pieces.  While she enjoyed knitting a wide variety of pieces, she was best known for her Irish hand-knit sweaters and personalized Halloween costumes, which she regularly made for her young sons.

Always on the sidelines of her sons’ sports or volunteering at their schools, Mary was the stalwart mom who always remained a positive, loving, supportive presence in her children’s lives.  While she will be greatly missed by her family, Heaven has gained an amazing mom, wife, Gramsa, friend and a personal knitter.
