What to Do When Death Occurs

When a death occurs, the order in which things need to be done often depends on where the death occurred. But, one thing should always be remembered: your heightened emotional state upon the death of a loved one. That's why we suggest that you ask a friend for help - someone who is more able to think clearly, and give you the support you need.

Death in an Institution

When death occurs at a hospital or nursing home, the medical staff will contact the family. They should also take care of all necessary legal steps. Depending on hospital policy, either you or they will need to contact Rotruck-Lobb Funeral Home.

Unexpected Death at Home or Elsewhere

Immediately call 911. The police and emergency medical personnel will then determine the appropriate steps to be taken. Often, the police can release the deceased directly to Rotruck-Lobb Funeral Home . However, if further investigation into the cause of death is necessary, the body may need to go to the Medical Examiner's office. When the coroner has completed the exam, they will contact Rotruck-Lobb Funeral Home.

Anticipated Death at Home

Today, more people with terminal illnesses are electing to die at home under the care of hospice. In this situation, you just need to notify Hospice that Rotruck-Lobb Funeral Home is the funeral home of your choice. They will then take care of all necessary legal requirements, such as contacting the coroner and physician.

We suggest that when someone has a terminal illness, the family makes pre-arrangements with us so that they are not overwhelmed with the many important decisions at the time of death.

Death out of state

If the death occurs out of town or out of state, call Rotruck-Lobb Funeral Home at 304-329-0117 . We can coordinate with a local funeral director at the place of death who will assist in the removal, preparation, securing of the death certificate and transportation to our facility.
